November 1, 2013

Sixth graders in course 1 (periods 1, 2, 4, and 6) will have a quiz on division of fractions (including fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers) Monday, and a test on multiplication and division of fractions Wednesday.  I have posted a couple of Learn Zillion videos to the electronic filing cabinet.  We watched these videos in class, and they do a nice job of giving students the conceptual understanding for division of fractions.  Students may find them helpful in preparing for the quiz or the test.

Sixth graders in course 2 (period 3) will have a test on unit 2 Monday.  We will start work with percents Tuesday.

Don't forget to set your clocks back, and enjoy the extra hour!

October 21, 2013

Course 1 students continue to work with multiplication of fractions, and will start to consider division of fractions this week.  Test corrections are due during class Wednesday, October 23.

Course 2 students will apply ratio and rate concepts we have been working on to solving proportions, and scale drawings this week.

October 15, 2013

All sixth graders have received a textbook to use as a resource, and skill practice.  For example, if a student would like more practice putting fractions into simplest form (tonight's homework) he or she can find problems in section 5.3 of the textbook.  I have asked students to take the textbooks home and leave them there.  At this point, I am not planning to give any homework assignments from the textbook.

Friday, September 27, 2013

September 27/2013

Course 2 students are finishing their work on signed numbers.  We will create a poster showcasing what we have learned about positive and negative numbers the last part of next week.  Information will be distributed in class, as well as posted to the virtual filing cabinet.

Course 1 students have started working with factors and multiples.

Enjoy the beautiful fall weather we are having!!

September 20, 2013

Next week course 1 students will have a quiz on decimal computation (Tuesday) and start work with factors.
Course 2 students will work on multiplying integers and rational numbers.

Friday, September 13, 2013

September 13,2013

Course 1 students are starting work on decimal computation.  With each operation, we are starting with a conceptual approach, then moving to skill practice.

Course 2 students are starting work with integer operations.

Enjoy the cooler weather!

Septermber 6, 2013

Course 1 students are working hard on long division.  We will continue working on long division next week, with a quiz on Thursday.  We'll start decimal computation next week, also.
Course 2 students will continue their review of fractions, and fraction computation next week.
I look forward to seeing everyone at Curriculum Night next week on September 11.

August 29, 2013

Welcome to sixth grade math!  We made it through the first few days; next week we will dig in!  Students in periods 1, 2, 4, 6 will start with long division.  Students in period 3 will start with fractions.

Enjoy the long weekend!

March 1, 2013

All Lakeview students will be taking ISATs next week.  These tests are important for individual students, as well as our school as a whole, so students should be encouraged to take the tests seriously, and to do their best work.  Students should be well-rested, and have a nutritious breakfast each morning.  Students will need their calculator Tuesday and Wednesday for the math tests.
It's March, and daylight savings time is only 10 days away!!

Friday, February 22, 2013

February 22, 2013

Students in 3rd period will learn about the Pythagorean theorem and right triangles next week.  They can start working on their chapter 8 problem set, which they will receive today and is due March 8.
Students in periods 1, 2, 4, and 6 will start work on solving equations algebraically (what did you do to both sides?) next week.

February 15, 2013

Students in 3rd period math have started work on perimeter, circumference and area.

The students in periods 1, 2, 4 and 6 have completed the math unit on Integers.  For a culminating assignment, the students will be writing a RAFT.  This will be a creative writing project the students will be completing in class.  The acronym RAFT, stands for Role, Audience, Format, and Topic.  The students make decisions on their writing before they begin.

Directions for this RAFT:

  1. R- role of the writer-  Who are you?- for this RAFT the students can choose to be a type of integer (any positive or negative number, or zero).
  2. A- audience- To whom is this written?- the students can choose to write to any type of integer ( a positive could be writing to a positive, or a positive can write to a negative, or maybe a zero is writing to a negative).
  3. F- format- What form will it take?- the students can write a News Story, a Journal/Diary, a Cartoon, or Commercial.
  4. T- topic + strong verb- the student can be writing to complain, demand to plead, excite, or scare.

After some time to brainstorm using a graphic organizer, we are asking the students to finish their rough drafts over the weekend.  On Tuesday, 2/19, the students will be typing their final RAFT on their Google Drive accounts.

Next week we will delve into algebra, translating words into algebraic expressions and equations.
Enjoy the long weekend!
