9/16/11

Students in periods 1 & 4 will have their test Monday, then start our unit on data and graphing next week. This unit will include a project that will ask students to represent data we have collected about them in various ways.
Students in periods 2, 5, and 6 are finishing chapter 1, with our test Friday of next week. We will then start our chapter on measurement.

This week's organization tip: each student should have a folder for each class. This folder should remain in the student's binder. All papers from class that are not in a notebook should go in this folder. If a student uses a homework folder (which I would discourage), the homework assignment should go back in the subject folder once the assignment is returned to the student or discussed in class. Assignments should not remain in a homework folder long-term.

Curriculum Night!

This week's organizational tip: all students should have a math notebook; this notebook should have all notes from math class, as well as all homework assignments (with the exception of assignments that are on handouts); the math notebook should not have any other subject in it.

I look forward to meeting parents at curriculum night, Monday, September 12! The evening starts with a PTO meeting at 6:45.

Welcome to sixth grade!

We are off to a great start!
All sixth graders will take the math MAPS Tuesday. It is important that students do their best work on these tests so we know what concepts we need to work on. So I encourage all 6th graders to get a good night's sleep Monday and eat a good breakfast Tuesday morning.
I look forward to a very productive year!

WOW Day!

Lakeview students and teachers are excitedly preparing for WOW (Widen Our World) Day, when students pick a topic, learn about it, and create a product related to their topic to share with their Homebase. Students are working on their plan for the day, including what steps they will take to learn about their topic and complete their product, as well as what materials they will need to supply (and what resources they will require here!). I am excited to see our students learn in a self-directed environment.
Next week, first period students will have their test on volume and surface area.
Students in periods 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 will have their test on ratio, proportion and percent Monday. We will then start our exploration of area.

These tests are very important to our school, both for information about how individual students are doing, and about how our school as a whole is doing. So it is very important that all students are able to work to the best of their abilities. In order to do this, students need to be sure to get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast. I am sure all Lakeview students will do a great job taking ISATs!
